Single hand in 29: playing a contract alone

The single-hand rule in the 29 card game. When a bidder can go alone, what happens to the partner's cards, how the stakes change, and when the risk is worth it.

A single hand works when the bidder's own cards can win the tricks without help.

A single hand is 29's version of playing alone in Euchre or going nil in Spades. The bidder decides their own cards are strong enough to win without help, and sends their partner to the sidelines. It is the most dramatic call in the game, and one of the quickest ways to swing a match.

How it is declared

After winning the bid and choosing the trump, or calling the seventh card, the bidder may announce single hand. In 29 Royale the decision appears right after the trump choice, with a short window to accept or decline. Once it is declared, it cannot be taken back.

What happens to the partner

The partner's cards are set aside, face down. The partner does not play. The bidder leads and follows in the normal order, and the tricks are played three-handed.

This changes the counting. Eight cards are out of the hand, so the 29 points are no longer all reachable. A single-hand bidder is collecting the bid out of the points still in play. Tables use different conventions here. 29 Royale keeps the bid as declared and lets the bidder collect from what remains.

When a single hand is worth it

Only with a hand that wins tricks by itself:

  • The Jack and the 9 of trump, plus at least two more trumps, so you can pull every trump and still have one left.
  • Point cards in a second suit, protected by a trump that lets you win back in.
  • A bid low enough that your own tricks cover it without help.

If you need one specific card to fall from the defenders, do not go alone. Two defenders who cooperate are very good at keeping that card back.

Defending against a single hand

The defenders' job is to force the bidder to use trumps early and to keep their point cards until the bidder runs out. Lead the suits the bidder is short in. Do not spend a Jack to take a trick worth one point while the bidder still has trumps to play.

In 29 Royale

Single hand is a match setting, on by default. The arena zooms in after the decision, the sitting-out partner's seat shows no card count, and the hand plays out three-handed. The bots declare a single hand only when their trump length and point cards make it clearly favourable. That is a good model for your own decisions. 29 Royale is free on Google Play. Try a single hand in the practice arena before you risk trophies on one.
