Choosing a card game app: a checklist before you install

A short checklist for choosing a card game app on Android: offline play, accounts, ads, purchases, rules and bots. What to check before you install.

Five checks to run on a card game listing before you install

Card game apps look similar in the store, and they can differ a lot once you install one. This checklist covers the things worth checking before you tap install. It is short on purpose. Five checks catch most of the problems.

1. Does it work offline?

Look for the word offline on the listing. An app that needs a connection to play will stop when the signal drops. Play Boom Games describes its apps as offline. Check the listing of any other app before you rely on it.

2. Does it need an account?

A single-player game usually does not need one. If the app asks you to sign in before you can play, ask why.

3. Are there ads or purchases?

Read the listing and try one round. Ads that break up every hand make a game hard to enjoy. Purchases that unlock the rules you need are a bigger problem than purchases for cosmetics.

4. Do the rules match your table?

Card games have local variations. Read the rules section, or play one hand, and check the bidding, trump and scoring against what you know. Our 29 rules guide is a reference for 29.

5. Are the bots fair?

Bots should follow the same rules as you and use only the information a player would have. Our bots guide explains what to watch for.

Where to start

Our offline card apps list names apps from Live Game Labs, Evonix Ventures and Play Boom Games, with a guide for each game. Use the checklist on whichever one looks right.

Questions people ask

Why check for offline play first?

Because it decides whether the app works on a train or a plane. An app that needs a connection to deal a hand will fail when the signal does.

Should I avoid apps that ask for an account?

Not always, but check why. An account is useful for multiplayer. For a single-player game it is usually unnecessary.

How do I tell whether ads will ruin the game?

Read the listing and try a round. Ads that interrupt every hand make a game hard to enjoy.

Do the rules matter if the app is free?

Yes. An app with the wrong rules teaches you the wrong game, so check the rules section or play a hand first.

What about bots?

Check that bots follow the same rules as you. Our bots guide explains what to watch for.
